Background
BerberHygge brings together two restaurants on rue de Wattignies in Paris’s 12th arrondissement, Le Grand and Le Petit BerberHygge, combining Berber cooking with a setting inspired by Scandinavian hygge.
In May 2022, the restaurant had an ageing website that no longer matched its image, and a limited Instagram presence. The overhaul of its communication was carried out at Les Productions Zanzibar, as part of a web design internship.
Organisation
The agency’s director handled the client relationship and approved each deliverable before it went to the restaurant.
As a small business, the restaurant did not work from a formal brief: requests came in as they arose, mostly expressed as a mood, such as a livelier look or more visible elements. As the sole person responsible for design and development, from site structure to mockups and from art direction to build, I organised these requests into project stages, turned them into concrete choices, and iterated until sign-off.
Website
The website was designed and built entirely in WordPress, with an online booking module available from every page. The site structure covers the venue’s story, both restaurants’ menus, brunch, drinks, the gallery, private hire and contact.
The visual identity draws on the restaurant’s terracotta and brown tones, and presents the dishes as polaroids.
The website’s identity was then carried over to print (menus, business cards, signage) to keep the online and in-restaurant experience consistent.
Social media
Content production included seven stories a week, focused on behind the scenes in the kitchens and the chefs’ skills, along with “Culture Food” editorial carousels, giveaways and promotion of the venue’s events: an author dinner, an exhibition by artist Hamsi Boubeker and a concept store bringing together women designers.
